Angela Jenkins
Angela Marie Jenkins was born and raised in Anchorage, AK. As a child, she noticed a lack of culturally appropriate care within the Alaskan Native population and her desire to improve access to quality healthcare fostered her pursuit to become a medical doctor. Before starting Undergrad Angela worked as a medical records technician, certified medical assistant, medical authorizations coordinator, and advanced medical support assistant. In December 2020, she graduated with her Associate of Science at Columbus State University and transferred to Bowie State University with plans to attend medical school after graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Biology.
In the summer of 2021, Angela worked in the Smith research lab at Bowie State University as a research assistant which shaped her passion for cancer research with her work in evaluating fluorescent compounds for potential use in targeting and monitoring drug delivery to the brain. She completed the Aspirnaut Undergraduate Summer Internship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2022 where she investigated the role of integrins in mouse and human kidney cancer cell lines and the 2023 American Cancer Society (ACS) for Diversity in Cancer Research (DICR) fellowship at Georgetown University. She continues to work at Georgetown University as a research coordinator on a National Cancer Institute-funded study that seeks to develop a novel web-based intervention to address symptom burden after radioactive iodine treatment in patients with thyroid cancer. Angela’s clinical and research experiences influenced her long-term career objective to become a physician-scientist who serves the minoritized population, specifically, Alaskan Native/American Indian populations.
