Giovanna Sanchez Cisneros
As a first-generation Mexican immigrant, my awareness of the health struggles and social injustices faced by marginalized communities has deepened. Growing up, my family, along with the majority of the members of my community, relied on the emergency department when facing ailments. Through these encounters, I witnessed firsthand the unwavering dedication of caregivers who believe they can make the world a better place for others. This conviction resonated deeply with me and fueled my determination to join their ranks.
For so long now, I have been determined to join these caregivers who do their best to help others keep illness and injury from limiting their lives. Building upon my experiences and commitment to achieving equity, I have worked as a medical scribe, medical assistant, pre-health mentor, and most recently dove into immigration advocacy. Completing a Post-Baccalaureate program at UC Davis School of Medicine provided a transformative experience, allowing me to apply concepts from courses and seminars to my everyday life. I was able to prove to myself and others I am capable of handling the rigorous work medical school has to offer when rooted in an environment that is set to help you thrive even with life's uncertainties. Through it all, my desire to pursue a medical career continues to grow. I will use these experiences as a testament to my perseverance as a future medical student and a future physician committed to serving underserved communities.
