Mikayla Scott
From nursing her baby dolls to health as a child, to witnessing her family members struggle to find culturally competent and affordable healthcare, Mikayla Scott has had a lifelong dream of becoming the first physician in her family. From Oakland, CA, Mikayla has had the opportunity to live in the Bay Area and sunny Socal, when she attended the University of California, Irvine. There she received her Bachelors in Psychology in Fall 2020 while maintaining a busy competition schedule as a track and field athlete. At the time, she wanted to pursue a career as a psychiatrist and held a leadership role as a Peer Educator Coordinator in the UCI Counseling Center, where she and a team worked to make mental health topics such as Test Anxiety, Sucidide Prevention, and Self Esteem more palpable for students.
To prepare her for a career in medicine, she held positions as a Medical Assistant, Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator, and combined her love for travel, other cultures, and medicine by volunteering to provide free medical services to patients in Guatemala. Today, Mikayla’s passion for people and determination to comfortably maneuver and understand the American healthcare system has led her to become a Complex Care Health Navigator in East Oakland, where she helps patients of color navigate the American healthcare system and satisfy their medical and social needs. A previous role as a Peer Health Educator in a Community Health Resource Center led her to pursue a new interest in sexual health education. With this in mind, she now has the aspiration of becoming a Gynecologist. Outside of this, Mikayla enjoys learning and practicing Spanish, yoga and dancing bachata, and spending time with her poodle, Muffy.
